The C&C 99 was designed as a performance racing yacht with a strong emphasis on incorporating all of the desirable features of a comfortable cruiser. And to his credit, designer Tim Jackett did such a great job that the C&C 99 was voted ‘Best Performance Cruiser’ in 2002 by Cruising World.
The construction of C&C yachts is a level above your typical production boats. The hull laminate is vacuum bagged with EPOXY resin and Kevlar is used in high load areas. The deck laminate is Vinylester with a high strength Baltec premium balsa core. This creates an incredibly strong, light weight and very stiff hull that delivers a higher degree of performance on the water. In fact, C&C yachts are so confident in the build quality of their yachts that they offer a 15-year hull structural and blister guarantee. ‘Sophia’ still has 3 years remaining on her guarantee.
With a tall carbon mast, a powerful sail plan and a well-balanced hull form, the 99’s perform extremely well and are a real pleasure to sail. Sophia has been nicely setup by her current owner to be easily single handed. The mainsail can be reefed from the cockpit, the primary winches are in easy reach of the helm and the asymmetrical spinnakers are easy to deploy from the retractable carbon bow sprit.
The interior has been very thoughtfully designed and when you step down the companionway it feels both spacious and homely. The clever design incorporates angled bulkheads and a galley mounted on an angle. And with the saloon table folded down the interior has great flow through on either side making it effortless to move around. The interior is light and bright and ventilation is very good. From the Corian bench tops to the beautiful warm Cherry timber, the quality of the fit out is evident everywhere you look.
The U-shaped galley features a large moulded sink and a very generous 90lt fridge/freezer surrounded with 4 inches of insulation. The Force 10 stove has two burners, an oven and grill, and a fully compliant gas installation with a gas detector and certificate. The counter top above the stove is removable and designed to double as a serving tray.
Accommodation is well catered for with two double cabins. The private owner’s suite forward is unusually large for a yacht of this size and features direct access to the bathroom. The bathroom has dual access and both doors can be latched open at the same time to facilitate fast drying after using the shower. The aft cabin also features a generous sized double bed and hanging locker. There is a large saloon dining table and with both sides folded out will easily accommodate up to six adults for diner.
Sophia has been extremely well maintained by her current owner and he has spent over $60,000. Oo in upgrades and maintenance over the past 3 years. All of her sails are under three years old and the standing rigging was replaced in 2019. The hull was Nano Coated in 2018, so it is very easy to clean, will retain its shine and does not require any waxes or polishes to be applied on an annual basis.
