Ufo 34 ~ Classic fast cruiser-racer
The UFO 34, designed by renowned naval architects Holman & Pye, earned a strong reputation as a fast, capable cruiser-racer with genuine offshore ability.
The design was so successful that more than 150 yachts were built in both the UK and Australia. They track well offshore, perform strongly upwind, and remain predictable and easy to manage in heavier conditions.
During the notorious 1998 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race the UFO 34 Not Negotiable experienced winds in excess of 65 knots for approximately 6-8 hours. During this period breaking waves of 4-8 metres, with the occasional 12 metre wave were also encountered. Apart from one knockdown to 80 degrees, Not Negotiable had no issues and safely retired to Eden.
Six UFO 34s competed in the fatal 1979 Fastnet race and experienced winds averaging 50 to 55 knots, gusts to 68 knots and waves as high as 50 feet. None of them sustained significant structural damage to the hull. Among the 58 boats in Class IV (34 ft), two of the six finishing yachts were UFO 34s.
The interior of Uforia has a distinctive feel, combining warm light timber finishes with contrasting teal accents throughout. Large windows bring in plenty of natural light, giving the boat an open, bright, and inviting atmosphere below deck.
The saloon features a central drop-leaf dining table with two generous settees either side. Due to the generous size, these settees also double as additional accommodation and make excellent sea berths while underway.
The L-shaped galley is located to port and includes a two-burner stove, large stainless-steel sink, top-loading icebox, and plenty of practical storage.
Aft of the galley is a very practical storage area that also provides excellent access to the port side of the engine. It’s an ideal space for stowing additional sails, fenders, and deck gear.
Forward of the saloon is the main cabin, which also incorporates the bathroom. The head is electric, with a convenient basin to starboard. The cabin features a generous double berth with an infill cushion, along with a large overhead hatch that provides plenty of natural light and ventilation.
The cockpit is well laid out for practical sailing, with six winches and the mainsheet within easy reach. The setup works well for short-handed sailing and can be comfortably managed by a couple or single-handed.
Uforia has been repowered with a high-quality 30HP Yanmar engine, showing only around 260 hours of use and still effectively barely run in.
The mast is hinged and fitted with a mast-lowering system, including two spinnaker poles and the necessary lowering gear.
The current owner purchased Uforia in 2004 and has primarily sailed her on the river, taken part in twilight racing, and made the occasional trip to Rottnest.
Uforia presents as a well-maintained cruising yacht that is ready to step aboard and enjoy on the water.
