There have been more Catalina 36’s built than any other 36 foot production boat in history. The original 36 was highly regarded for it’s sailing characteristics, ease of handling and comfortable interior. Catalina took onboard the feedback from thousands of happy owners and designed the updated 36 MKII. The mkII is the evolution of the original successful design, with a completely new deck layout and multitude of new design features and refinements.
When you take a look at 36mkII it’s easy to see why the design was so successful for Catalina. Simply put, it is a very comfortable, practical and liveable design that can easily be handled by a couple. And with a seakindly moderate displacement hull, the 36mkII tracks surely, performs well in a variety of conditions, and has a nice smooth motion while underway.
The cockpit is huge for a yacht of this size and that makes the design a real pleasure to sail. The bench seats are long enough to stretch out and lay down on, and great for lazing around while sitting on the pick. The pushpit seats provide a fantastic vantage point while underway or at anchor. The large fold out cockpit table will easily accommodate half a dozen sailors for lunch, and while folded down, provides great bracing while underway. All of the running rigging runs aft so you don’t have to leave the safety and comfort of the cockpit while sailing. Another really practical design feature is the extra wide and deep folding ladder. Climbing back onboard after a swim couldn’t be easier, and it is great for bracing the dinghy against while boarding the yacht.
‘Kaimana’ has an excellent electrical installation and an inventory of high-quality electronics. On the helm is 12″ Raymarine Es hybrid touch screen chartplotter, with a complete setup of Raymarine instrumentation just above. The Raymarine X10 autopilot had a new Hy-ProDrive hydraulic electric actuator installed in 2022. All of the electronics communicate with each other via a Raymarine Seatalk network (NMEA 2000).
The house batteries are Lithium LiFePO4 with a total capacity of 270 amp/hr. To achieve the same usable capacity in AGM batteries you would need a bank of around 600 amp/hr. Charging is taken care of by a single 360W solar panel with 30A MPPT solar regulator, both new Nov 2020. This setup actually produces excess power, and while living onboard the batteries are rarely seen below 85% capacity. There is a 2000W pure sine wave inverter, new Dec 2020, that has been wired into the 240v circuit via a three-way rotary switch. This is a very convenient setup that allows you to use the inverter through any of the 240v outlets in the boat. The inverter has the capacity to run a coffee machine and toaster.
The stereo system features Fusion’s top of the range RA770 head unit, Fusion subwoofer and amplifier and Bose speakers. The system is only two years old and cost over $1500. Needless to say, the sound quality is superb and it can be operated from the Fusion Link app on any smart phone. There are also two cockpit speakers to complete the setup.
Step down the companionway and this is where the 36mkII really shines. The U-shaped galley is huge and very well designed. The twin stainless sinks have been positioned near centreline for proper drainage while underway. The top loading fridge is very large and features extra thick insulation to ensure energy efficient running. Storage is excellent with numerous cabinets, draws and a huge top loading pantry under the bench. There is a gimballed two burner stove with oven and a gas detector to ensure safe operation. The Corian style composite benchtops are durable and add a touch of class.
The saloon has a number of very clever design features. The layout can be mixed and matched to suit your desired use. On the starboard side is a small games table with a seat forward and aft. The table can be lowered, and an infill cushion converts it into a long settee or extra berth. On the port side is the main dinning table surrounded by a spacious U-shaped settee. It can also be lowered, and another infill cushion converts it to a day bed or double birth for additional guests. This is great use of space and one of the reasons this design is so practical and comfortable to live onboard. Moving forward on the starboard side there is a tallboy with a built in TV/drinks cabinet with a handy set of drawers below. The nav table features a swing out seat and all of the circuit breakers are well laid out and in easy reach.
Accommodation is well catered for with two private cabins. The forward owners cabin features a plush memory foam mattress and at the widest point is the equivalent width of a king size bed. There are plenty of storage options with a hanging robe, cabinet with mirrors, and draws below the head of the bed. The large overhead hatch provides plenty of natural light and excellent ventilation. The aft cabin features a huge king size bed that allows you to sleep on either orientation. In a rough anchorage this is the go-to as it allows you to sleep sideways across the bed, greatly reducing the rolling action. For ventilation there is a large hatch that opens into the cockpit and a port hole provides extra light and ocean glimpses. A hanging robe and set of draws offer good storage options.
The bathroom is also very spacious for a yacht of this size and there is more storage that you will know what to do with. There are shower curtains to keep the head dry and a seat for when things are a little rocky. The hot water system was new in 2020 and works off shore power or engine driven. The manual Jabsco head was new Dec 2021 and there is the option to pump it directly overboard or into the holding tank. There was a new macerator pump installed on the tank in 2020 so all off the black water plumbing is excellent.
Engine access is very good and that makes maintenance considerable easier. With the companionway stairs and front engine cover removed, you gain easy access to the entire front end of the engine. And the aft cabin has removable panels that provide clear access to the back end, gearbox and filters.
For a production boat, the build quality of Catalina’s is very good. The hulls are rugged hand-laminated solid fibreglass, and the keels are antimonious lead with integrally cast stainless steel bolts. With stainless steel handrails and the absence of exterior timber, maintenance has been kept to minimum.
Kaimana is an exceptionally well setup boat, with a high-quality inventory of modern electronics, great set of sails, and virtually everything you could wish for on a cruising yacht of her size. She is truly a turn-key cruising yacht and ready in every respect to sail off into the sunset tomorrow.
Good quality modern productions yachts like this have become extremely hard to find in the current market and she will not last long. So don’t delay, pick up the phone and book an inspection now, before someone else sails her off into the sunset.
