BRUCE ROBERTS OFFSHORE 38

When it comes to designing capable blue water cruising yachts, there are no better designers than naval architect Bruce Roberts. The Roberts Offshore 38 is a safe and capable blue water cruising yacht, designed to be easily handled by a couple. A comfortable motion and great sea-keeping abilities are hallmarks of Roberts designs.

Many years ago, way outback in the wheatbelt of Western Australia, close to the rabbit proof fence, a farmer had a dream to build a world class cruising yacht and sail off into the sunset. Sadly he never did realise his dream, but he did meticulously build a superb hull and deck. He also purchased a great deal of the equipment to complete the project and he certainly had an eye for quality at any expense. Impressed by the quality of the build, the current owner seized the opportunity and purchased the boat. He then transported her all the way to Henderson, where the fit out was jointly completed by himself and a shipwright.

‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ is a rugged and solidly built steel cruising yacht. The overall build quality is of a very high standard. The fairleads, cleats and toe rail are all custom made from stainless steel, a nice touch that helps to reduce maintenance.

The interior is light and bright, uncluttered and rather minimalist in design. The layout is practical in application and there is very good access to all of the systems onboard. The hull has been well insulated to keep the interior cool in the summer and with a total of ten opening hatches ventilation is also excellent.

The original builder was meticulous in his approach and there are many components onboard of exceptional quality. A good example of this is the Taylors paraffin stove and heater. Taylors cookers and heaters are hand built in England to a time-honoured design and have an exceptional reputation. The Taylors Conqueror Paraffin 2 Plate Cooker with Grill and Separate oven can be found online retailing for a staggering AUD$12,681 (Not a misprint). The Britannia Paraffin Heater is around $6000. Fuel is supplied to the cooker and heater via a custom-made paraffin storage tank that you pump up to pressure with a bicycle pump. This is a simple and brilliant design that also eliminates the danger and worries of LPG Gas onboard.

The engine and propulsion system are also of very high quality. The BMW D50 diesel engine is a design that was highly praised for its smooth running characteristics that are comparable to a six cylinder engine. There is a high-quality PSS dripless shaft seal and an excellent Slipstream three blade feathering prop.

The forward cabin has two single berths. This has the potential to be converted to a large double with the addition of an in-fill cushion. The best place to sleep on a boat while underway and in a rolly anchorage, is midships. And this is exactly where the double berth has been positioned. This also doubles as a comfortable day bed which is great for relaxing with a good book.

The centre cockpit is well designed for sailing offshore with nice high combings and good bracing. With the primary winches and mainsheet both in easy reach of the helm, she is easily sailed by a couple or singlehanded. There is a very cleverly designed boarding ladder/swim platform that folds all the way down to the water level.

The current owner has cruised the WA coast with trips up to the Abrolhos Islands, Ningaloo Reef, and has spent two winters up at Shark Bay.

Rabbit Proof Fence has been well maintained and presents in great condition. And at the asking price, represents very good value for money.

The Pen at FSC is available to lease for a member, or for someone who want to join the club.
