ADAMS NAUT 40
When it comes to designing serious blue water cruising yachts, there were no finer designers than naval architect Joe Adams. Adams designed the Naut 40 to be a serious blue water cruising yacht. And with 400lt of diesel and 1200lt of water on board, she was certainly designed from the ground up to cross oceans and circumnavigate the globe.
The design combines a long fin keel with the additional strength and security of a skeg hung rudder. The first choice of many experienced cruising sailors.
The Naut 40 was produced with a number of different deck layouts and configurations. ‘Ambience’ is the highly desirable pilot saloon version. The saloon features an internal helm station with engine controls, great for when the weather gets nasty outside or when you just simply want a break from the wind. The wrap around windows provide a ton of natural light and sensational panoramic views.
Unlike many Adams yachts, Ambience was professionally built, and the interior is quite stunning. Everywhere you look there is an abundance of rich warm timber, and the quality of the joinery work is quite outstanding. One of the standout features is the exceptional amount of storage. There are draws and cupboards galore, exactly what the cruising sailor/liveaboard needs.
The galley has been very thoughtfully designed for life at sea. Again, there is a ton of great storage options in the many draws and cupboards. The top loading fridge and freezer are huge and extend all the way down from the countertop to the floor. As does the top access pantry that incorporates some very practical sliding storage baskets. Additional bench space can be created using the fold up extension table.
Naturally, accommodation has been well catered for. The master cabin forward features a comfortable double pullman berth and private ensuite. Storage options are numerous and include multiple draws and a big hanging wardrobe. The guest’s cabin is in the starboard aft quarter and features a double bed and ensuite. The port aft quarter is a general storage/workshop area that also has the potential to be an additional single berth. This cabin also features additional engine access, dedicated storage on the roof for the fishing rods, storage for the emergency tiller and boat hook etc etc.
The cockpit is another strong point of this design. From behind the helm the vision is very good above the dodger. The primary winches are well positioned in close reach of the helm. The running rigging runs aft to the four self-tailing winches on the coach house roof. There is a complete set of covers and the entire cockpit can be enclosed to provide great all-round protected from the weather.
Ambience comes with a good quality RIB with an alloy floor and a 2.3hp Honda four stroke outboard. The dinghy is securely stowed on a very solidly built pair of davits.
In summary, Ambience is a very well designed and capable live aboard blue-water cruising yacht of exceptional build quality. And at only $70k represent excellent value for money. So why the low price? The bottom line is, the majority of the teak decks have reached the end of their life. They need to be ripped up, filled and faired, and a none slip finish applied. If you are handy, this is certainly a job you could tackle yourself and complete at a reasonably low cost. This is a great opportunity for someone willing to roll up their sleeves and put in the work in order to obtain a high-quality cruising yacht at a bargain basement price.
