John Pugh Windstar ~ Turn-Key live aboard cruising yacht

Boat type
Sailboat
Length LOA
54' - 16.45m

The John Pugh-designed Windstar is a rugged and highly capable bluewater cruising yacht, professionally built and purpose-designed for safe, comfortable ocean passages. With her strong steel hull, exceptional liveaboard features, and a proven history of both coastal and offshore cruising, Windstar is fully equipped and ready to fulfil your cruising ambitions — whether you’re planning to explore the coast or cross oceans.

‘Windstar’ — someone had to claim the name — was professionally built by J&M Byrne in Brisbane. She boasts a rugged, high-integrity steel hull and deck, complemented by a high-quality, professionally executed interior fitout.

The interior layout is optimized for a typical cruising couple, featuring a spacious and luxurious master cabin aft, and well-appointed crew quarters in the forward bow. Both cabins feature private ensuites, ensuring comfort and autonomy aboard.

One of Windstar’s standout features is the raised aft poop deck, which provides excellent visibility both under sail and when manoeuvring in close quarters. A dedicated helm seat offers comfort and control, positioned directly behind the pedestal, which is equipped with a full suite of modern navigation instruments — all within easy reach. Overhead, a hardtop bimini offers reliable protection from the elements, ensuring safe and comfortable steering in all conditions.

Equipped with a furling mainsail, genoa, and staysail, Windstar is designed for easy short-handed sailing — whether handled by a couple or even sailed single-handed. All lines lead aft and the sails can be set, reefed and furled away from the safety of the cockpit.

Step down the companionway and you enter the beautifully designed and fully equipped pilothouse — offering full protection from the elements and exceptional visibility. This space is a watch-keeper’s dream, featuring a secondary helm station that puts everything at your fingertips — from engine controls and systems monitoring, to navigation and communications, and autopilot — all surrounded by panoramic windows that offer incredible views and natural light, whether underway or at anchor.

Beneath the pilothouse floor, you step down into a spacious and well-organized engine room. The space offers excellent access to both the main engine and genset, making routine maintenance straightforward. A significant portion of the vessel’s systems and equipment are also housed here, all clearly laid out and easily accessible for inspection or servicing.

Moving forward from the pilothouse you enter the heart of Windstar — the main saloon and galley. The craftsmanship is immediately evident, with a stunning timber fitout showcasing Australian Red Cedar, Sapele, and Teak, creating a warm and inviting interior. At the centre of the space is a large handcrafted dining table, surrounded by a comfortable U-shaped settee, which also serves as a secure sea berth while underway.

The galley is fully electric, running entirely off 240V power. A full-size electric stove and oven eliminate the need for gas onboard, enhancing both convenience and safety. Refrigeration is robust, with a front-opening fridge featuring a large eutectic plate to maintain cold temperatures efficiently, and a well-insulated under-bench freezer offering ample cold storage for extended passages.

Just forward of the main saloon on the starboard side is a dedicated laundry area, complete with a built-in washing machine — a highly practical feature for extended cruising. Moving further forward, you’ll find a well-designed utility and storage space, equipped with ample drawers and a functional workbench, ideal for tools, spare parts, or general stowage.

In the port-side bow, the crew cabin offers comfortable accommodation with double bunk beds and its own private ensuite, ensuring both comfort and privacy for additional crew or guests.

Located aft of the pilothouse, the master owner’s cabin is a true retreat at sea, featuring a full queen-size walkaround bed — the epitome of luxury. The cabin offers an outstanding amount of storage, with the bed surrounded by custom cabinetry, drawers, and generous hanging lockers, all beautifully crafted in rich warm timber. Two large overhead hatches flood the space with natural light and provide excellent ventilation, complemented by opening portholes in the hull that further enhance airflow and ambiance.

The private ensuite is impressively spacious, equipped with an electric head, and a separate stand-up shower cubicle — a highly desirable feature on a liveaboard cruising yacht.

Windstar has been owned and meticulously maintained by her current owner for the past 29 years — a remarkable period of stewardship that is clearly reflected in her excellent presentation today. During his ownership, he spent five years cruising the East Coast of Australia, including a voyage to New Caledonia. Later, he undertook a memorable passage from Brisbane to Perth, sailing through the breathtaking Kimberley region along the way.

Now, due to health reasons, Windstar is being reluctantly offered for sale, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a well-proven, beautifully maintained bluewater cruising yacht.

Windstar is being offered to the market as a true turn-key cruising yacht, ready to set sail immediately. Included in the sale is a comprehensive inventory of accessories, spare parts, and onboard equipment — everything needed for extended, self-sufficient cruising. Among the extensive list are engine filters and impellers, a spare freshwater pump, spare windlass motor, various pumps, a full set of tools, electrical equipment, and even the pots and pans in the galley. From essential maintenance spares to everyday cruising comforts, Windstar comes equipped with all the gear needed to step aboard and go.
