Hunter Legend 36
The Hunter Legend 36 is the perfect size coastal cruising yacht for a couple or small family. It has been thoughtfully designed with simple reliable systems and ease of use in mind.
Hunter has created a mid-sized cruising yacht that’s exceptionally easy for a couple to sail, or single-handedly. Equipped with a furling mainsail and furling jib, it simplifies the sailing experience significantly. The primary winches are conveniently located next to the wheel, within easy reach of the helmsman. A standout feature is the heavy-duty stainless-steel arch positioned directly above the helm, complete with a long traveller on top. The control lines run down to cleats that are also easily accessible from the helm, allowing you to handle most of the trimming without having to let go of the wheel.
Designed by Glenn Henderson in 2003, the Hunter 36 was clearly ahead of its time. Its beam, carried well aft, offers several advantages similar to the latest production boats on the market. The design features a spacious cockpit, numerous practical storage lockers, and a large aft master cabin—highly desirable attributes for any cruising yacht. Additionally, the proven B&R rig with swept-back spreaders and no backstay has recently become a feature on some new models from Benneteau and Jeanneau.
Indeed, the cockpit on the H36 is incredibly large for a 36 footer, making ideal for entertaining larger groups of family and friends. The helm seat folds down and the wheel folds to give easy walk-through access to the swim/boarding platform. There are loads of drink holders which tells you that Henderson knows a thing or two about sailing. The lazarette on the port side is so large it includes a built-in step for easy access, providing ample space for gear, including an inflatable dinghy and other essentials. There are also a couple of generous storage lockers on the transom. But by far, one of the knock-out features of the cockpit, are the hugely popular princess seats on the pushpit. The view from these seats is spectacular while sailing and a great vantage point at anchor.
With its plumb bow and long waterline, the Hunter 36 glides effortlessly through the water. It’s also reassuring to know that Hunter has gone the extra mile in its construction, adding Kevlar reinforcement in the bow and an epoxy barrier coat to ensure maximum resistance to osmosis.
Below deck, the Hunter 36 boasts a classic two-cabin layout. The forward V-berth offers a spacious double bed along with ample storage options, complemented by Hunter’s signature bulkhead louvered window that opens up for an airy, open-plan feel. The master aft cabin features a full-size, athwartships queen bed with a headboard, and two opening hatches ensure excellent ventilation.
The saloon features a U-shaped settee surrounding a generously sized dining table. The table can be lowered to create a daybed for lounging or an additional double berth for unexpected guests. The settee on the port side has a lee cloth, providing a comfortable sleeping option during passages and also serving as a seat for the aft-facing navigation table.
The galley boasts an impressive amount of counter space and is clearly designed to be practical to cook in. The galley features upmarket Corian bench tops, twin stainless sinks, and a convenient bin that is easily accessed through the countertop behind the sink. Refrigeration is well addressed with an upright fridge beneath the galley bench and a separate freezer/fridge on the port side below the nav table. Additionally, the microwave operates off the onboard inverter.
The bathroom is a pleasant surprise for a yacht of this size, featuring a separate shower stall with a glass door. The head can be flushed with either fresh or salt water. The fresh water option prevents unpleasant odors from stagnant salt water when the boat is left in the pen, while the salt water option conserves valuable fresh water for onboard living. Additionally, the salt water pressure pump supplies water to the galley sink and a washdown hose.
The boat is fully equipped for self-sufficiency, thanks to an excellent electrical installation completed in the last couple of months. The solar panels, paired with Lithium house batteries, provide more power than needed, with the battery bank rarely dropping below 85% charge. As a result, the boat never needs to be plugged into shore power, allowing both fridges to run continuously, 24/7.
‘Y Knot’ has just undergone a refit, showcasing a host of new gear and canvas work. She is now exceptionally well-equipped and ready for summer adventures. The antifouling was just done in May 2024, along with as full hull polish, new stripes, and signwriting.
The Hunter Legend 36 is arguably one of the best-looking designs Hunter has produced, and it certainly catches the eye on the water. ‘Y Knot’ is in exceptional condition, and an inspection is sure to impress. Second-hand modern production boats like this are as rare as hen’s teeth in the Perth market, so don’t hesitate—call now to book an inspection before she’s gone!
