Great Club Racer

The Farr 9.2 was designed by world renowned naval architect Bruce Farr. The design brief was for a good all-round safe economical and fast cruising yacht of 30 foot (9.2m) overall length.

The design proved to be very successful and led to the formation of The Farr 9.2 Association of Australia (http://farr92.asn.au/). The objective of the Association is to promote the Farr 9.2 yacht as a one-design class throughout Australia, and to achieve racing under uniform class rules. There are currently around a dozen 9.2’s that are competitively raced on the Swan river with an annual Metro Series and State Championship up for grabs.

The design was an evolution and refinement of the successful Farr 1020 and the 11.6. Upwind performance and initial stability were both improved with a higher ballast ratio. Even by todays standards, with a good suite of sails, the Farr 9.2 can easily hold its own around the buoys against the newer modern designs.

Whether your into racing or just fast cruising the Farr 9.2 delivers in both departments. With a large spacious cockpit there is plenty of room for a full crew and ample space for entertaining. And with all running rigging lead aft to the coach house roof, the design is easily sailed short handed. A walk-through transom with a removable board gives easy access to the swim platform.

Farrago was professionally built by Hitech yachts in Henderson, WA. The hull is a timber encapsulated with fibreglass on both sides. This construction is common place in boat building and creates a very stiff, strong and durable superstructure. Hitech yachts had a great reputation for their sophisticated approach to boat building. Every yacht was built to comply with the American Bureau of Shipping Standards. They utilized some of the best materials available including Derakane viny-ester on the exterior of the hulls.

With her long lines, Farrago has a spacious interior. Accommodation is well catered for with a double berth forward, two singles in the saloon, and another double in the aft port quarter. The interior cabinet work is of a very high standard and there is loads of storage space.

Farrago is powered by a reliable 9hp Yanmar diesel that was rebuilt 18 months ago. A two blade folding prop reduces drag while sailing and a PSS dripless shaft seal helps to keep water out of the bilges.

Throughout her life Farrago has mainly been used for club racing and for that reason has a very basic inventory. There is an inbuilt water tank that has never been commissioned. As a club racer she is ready go. If your ambitions are to spend weekends a Rottnest and do some coastal cruising, then there is plenty of potential to make some simple additions to set her up as a comfortable live aboard cruiser. The mast is hinged and can be lowered with the two spinnaker poles in order to get under the bridges.
