Davidson 36 – Optimised for IMS
She was designed by the highly regarded naval architect Laurie Davidson. Davidson was the principal designer for Team New Zealand with their successful America’s cup campaigns in 1995 and 2000. He is also responsible for designing numerous other and racing and cruising designs that can be found the world over.
Kings Cross was originally designed to the IOR rule in 1985 and was then optimised to IMS. In 1995 she won the Sydney-Gold Coast Classic in her class. In 1996 she won the Sydney-Mooloolaba race. She has also won the Cruising Yacht Club’s prestigious Blue Water Championship four times. Her sister ship Ex-Tension was the winner of the 1986 Sydney-Hobart on corrected time.
In 2017 the topsides and deck were repainted and still present in excellent condition.
The interior is spartan and functional. There is small galley with a two burner kero stove, an ice box and a single sink amidships above the motor. There is a head up forward with a zip up curtain/door for privacy.
As you would expect on a bluewater racing yacht there is plenty of accommodation for a large crew. There are four seaberths in the saloon and four swing down cot berths in the aft quarters.
Kings Cross is powered by Bukh DV-18 diesel engine that presents in really good condition. Propulsive is via a saildrive and two blade folding prop.
The mast is hinged and could be lowered to get under the bridges and up the river. The standing rigging is rod and is getting well on in age. This is an area where some money needs to be spent and that has been taken into account with the pricing of the boat. A rig inspection was carried out on 26/09/2024 and the report is available by request.
With a little bit of effort and expenditure, Kings Cross could once gain be a highly competitive racing yacht with the potential to bring home the silverware.
