Roberts 58 ~ Turn-Key live aboard cruising yacht

Boat type
Sailboat
Length LOA
58' 6" - 17.83m

Designed by renowned Australian naval architect Bruce Roberts, the Roberts 58 embodies the qualities that have made his designs respected by blue-water cruisers around the world for decades.

With a full length keel and heavy displacement, the Roberts 58 is a robust blue-water yacht that was purpose designed to cross serious oceans in comfort and safety.

Exod has been thoughtfully configured for effortless short-handed sailing, making her an ideal vessel for a cruising couple. The schooner rig carries smaller, more manageable sails than an equivalent sloop, and offers a much greater range of sail combinations to suit changing conditions while keeping sail handling simple and stress-free. Adding to her ease of operation, all three sails are self-tacking, making tacking a virtually effortless affair. When manoeuvring in marinas or other confined spaces, the bow thruster provides excellent control and greatly simplifies close-quarters handling.

Safety was clearly a major consideration during the vessel’s construction, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the one metre high solid stainless steel lifelines that encircle the entire deck. Providing a secure handhold when moving about the boat, they work in conjunction with the wide side decks and deep bulwarks to create a safe and confidence-inspiring environment. Whether undertaking coastal passages or extended offshore voyages, these features greatly enhance safety and inspire confidence in challenging sea conditions.

The Roberts 58’s generous displacement and high-volume hull provide an impressive amount of interior space, resulting in comfortable living areas and abundant accommodation. The saloon is particularly inviting, offering an open, uncluttered layout with excellent freedom of movement. Rich, warm timber joinery throughout creates a timeless nautical atmosphere, while the substantial exposed deck beams are a striking feature, reflecting both the vessel’s robust construction and classic character.

The spacious galley is a standout feature, offering the size and functionality rarely found aboard a yacht. Well equipped for extended cruising, it features a full-size stove and oven with rangehood, deep double sinks, generous bench space, and abundant storage. Aft of the galley is a dedicated utility area housing the refrigeration systems, including a large top-loading freezer and full-size upright fridge/freezer, along with a microwave and washing machine.

Accommodation aboard Exod is exceptional, with a total of eight full-size berths providing ample space for family, guests, or extended cruising. The owner’s cabin is privately located aft, well separated from the guest accommodation forward, creating a peaceful retreat at the end of the day. Featuring a comfortable queen-size berth, the cabin has been thoughtfully designed as a luxurious sanctuary, complete with a flat-screen television, stereo system, and a cosy settee–perfect for unwinding with a good book or simply enjoying some quiet time away from the rest of the vessel. A further highlight is the cabin’s private access to the cockpit via a dedicated companionway and deck hatch, providing added convenience, privacy, and ventilation. A wall-mounted tablet beside the bed adds a touch of modern convenience, allowing you to monitor instruments, check or adjust the anchor alarm, and control selected onboard electrical systems–all from the comfort of the master cabin. Just forward of the master cabin is a private ensuite, complete with a separate shower stall for added comfort and convenience.

The forward cabin offers four full-size single berths and benefits from excellent natural light and ventilation courtesy of two large opening hatches. Just aft, the guest cabin to port provides a further two single berths, while opposite to starboard is the second bathroom, complete with a separate shower stall. Both cabins have generous storage options and there is a large linen cupboard in the hallway in-between them.

Exod is exceptionally well equipped for extended off-grid cruising, with a comprehensive electrical system designed for self-sufficiency. A substantial 1,620W solar array with eight Victron MPPT charge controllers keeps the impressive 1,130Ah lithium battery bank charged. A Victron DC-DC charger provides additional charging while the engine is running. A 1,500W inverter supplies 240V power onboard.

A comprehensive suite of Raymarine electronics and transducers provides reliable and intuitive onboard navigation and monitoring. The Raymarine autopilot, paired with a robust hydraulic drive unit, maintains a steady course with minimal input. All systems are fully networked via NMEA 2000 for seamless integration, with smart connectivity features that can alert your phone if the anchor drags, as well as automatically managing anchor light operation at dusk and dawn for added convenience and peace of mind.

Powering Exod is the legendary Gardner 5LW, an engine revered by commercial operators and classic yacht enthusiasts alike for its exceptional reliability, fuel efficiency, and longevity. Widely regarded as one of the finest marine diesel engines ever built, the Gardner delivers smooth, economical performance and is renowned for running effortlessly for decades with proper maintenance. Its slow-revving design produces impressive torque, making it ideally suited to a heavy-displacement cruising yacht. For many discerning sailors, a Gardner is far more than just an engine–it’s a major asset and a highly desirable feature in its own right. The engine had a full rebuild by Mainland Engineering (Brisbane) in 2016 and has only done 500 hours since.

In 2022, Exod underwent a major rigging and sail upgrade, significantly enhancing both performance and handling. The standing rigging was replaced with Dyneema DUX, polyester-sheathed and UV-treated, reducing weight aloft by approximately 270kg and improving stability and stiffness under sail. All turnbuckles were renewed at the same time, along with nearly all running rigging, of which approximately 95% was upgraded to Dyneema. The rig was also reconfigured from a mizzen foresail setup to a mainsail configuration, with a new Seldén boom featuring single-line reefing fitted to the mainmast. A foredeck track was installed to enable a self-tacking jib, alongside a brand new furling system. Additional deck hardware, including new Anderson winches, was installed to support the revised sail plan and control systems. A new jib and mainsail were also commissioned to complete the upgrade, representing an investment of close to $100,000.

Exod is exceptionally well equipped for modern offshore communications, offering a full suite of integrated systems for safety, navigation, and connectivity. For vessel-to-vessel communication, she is fitted with a B&G B60-B VHF radio with integrated AIS transponder, with both VHF and AIS operating via dedicated antennas mounted at the mastheads. Full VHF functionality can also be controlled from the B&G H60 wireless handset, conveniently housed in a charging cradle in the cockpit for easy access underway. Offshore connectivity is provided by an Iridium GO! satellite system with data capability, allowing phone calls, messaging, and weather updates from anywhere in the world. For high-speed internet access, Exod is also fitted with a Starlink system (installed 2026), enabling streaming and online connectivity that can be activated or paused according to cruising requirements. In addition, a Teltonika RUTX12 dual load-balanced 4G MIMO modem system with multiple masthead antennas provides robust coastal and near-shore connectivity, ensuring reliable communications in a wide range of cruising environments.

Exod has been very well set up and meticulously maintained as a true turn-key cruising yacht, complete with an extensive inventory of high-quality equipment and a range of significant recent upgrades. She presents in excellent cruising order and is ready for immediate departure–simply provision, top off the tanks, and set sail on your next adventure.
